The Scottish defender missed a number of games in the 07/08 season for the Clarets after sustaining a torn tendon injury in the home game against Southampton in October 2007.
However, after working hard to get back to full fitness, he became a regular in Owen Coyle's defence.
A threat from set pieces, the hard-tackling former Sunderland man gives experience and strengthens up the Burnley back line.
Caldwell's leadership and commitment to the club will be an asset in the 2008/09 season
Burnley completed the signing of Steven Caldwell from Sunderland, minutes before the transfer deadline in January 2007.
The centre-back signed a three-and-a-half year deal at Turf Moor for an initial £200,000. A further £200,000 will be payable to Sunderland at a later date.
Caldwell, 26, who has captained Sunderland this season, moved to the Stadium of Light from first club Newcastle United in June, 2004 on a free transfer and has been one of the club's most consistent performers.
The experienced defender had broken into the first team at St James' Park in the 2000/01 season, but failed to hold down a regular place and made the short move to Wearside.
Stirling-born Caldwell, a full Scottish international, had loan spells with Bradford City, Blackpool and Leeds United while with Newcastle.
At Sunderland, he quickly established a solid partnership with Gary Breen in the Black Cats' Championship winning title season of 2004/05.
He made 80 appearances for Sunderland, one of the last coming in the 2-2 draw against Burnley in December.
Caldwell was appointed club captain soon after his arrival at Turf Moor, replacing Wayne Thomas.
