Burnley signed defender David Edgar from Newcastle United in July 2009.
The Canadian U20 International agreed a four-year deal at Turf Moor with a tribunal instructing the Clarets to pay an initial fee of £300,000.
A further six-figure fee will be payable based on appearances with Newcastle also entitled to a sell-on fee for any future move.
Renowned for being a good leader, Edgar, 22, made seven starts at St James' Park last season, scoring one goal as the Magpies were relegated to the Championship.
Edgar left Canada at the age of 14 after winning a scholarship with the Newcastle United academy.
The centre-half began making regular appearances in the Newcastle reserve team during the 2005-06 season.
On 19 May 2006, whilst celebrating his nineteenth birthday, he played and scored in the Canadian Under-20 side's 2-1 victory over the Brazilian Under-20 side.
Edgar continued to appear for Newcastle's reserves, progressing to captain the side and was called up to the first team squad due to a lengthy injury list midway through the 2006-07 Premier League season.
He made his first team debut for Newcastle away at Bolton Wanderers on 26 December 2006 and marked his home debut in style, scoring his first goal for the club with a long range strike against Manchester United in a 2-2 draw.
Edgar received his first call-up to the full Canada squad in August 2008 against Iceland, but didn't feature in the game.
