Burnley originally completed the signing of Besart in July 2007 after being granted a work permit.

The striker, who can also play on the wing, signed a three-year deal at Turf Moor for £340,000 from German Bundesliga outfit Hamburg SV.

However, in his first season in England, Berisha suffered knee ligament damage on international duty in a Euro 2008 qualifier and underwent cruciate surgery that ruled him out of the 2007/08 season.

'Bes' returned to action in summer 2008 and after scoring his first Burnley goal during the 3-0 friendly win over Accrington in July, the Albanian international joined Norwegian club Rosenborg on loan until January 2009.

On his return, in January 2009, he joined Danish club AC Horsens until the summer of 2009.

Berisha started his playing career in 2003 at tennis Borussia Berlin, but was quickly snapped up by HSV for the start of the 2004/5 season.

He was then sent on loan to Aalborg Boldspiklub in the Danish Superliga.

After a successful spell at Aalborg he spent time at AC Horsens the following season, where he scored 11 goals in 31 appearances and became the league's top scorer.

Besart made 12 appearances for Hamburg in the Bundesliga, nine as a substitute and made two appearances in the Champions League - including one start and one from the bench - scoring one goal and becoming the first Albanian to find the net in Europe's premier competition.

Besart's first international appearance came against the Netherlands in October 2006 and he played a major role in Albania's Euro 2008 qualifying campaign until suffering his injury.

Burnley manager Steve Cotterill first spotted Besart when Albania played England B in a friendly international at Turf Moor in May 2007.

The fleet-footed winger scored his first goal for Albania and also hit the crossbar in a man of the match performance.

Several English, French and German clubs quickly joined the clamour for his signature, but Berisha was happy to choose the Clarets.
