Clarets Support Reading Initiative
Burnley defender Graham Alexander has pledged his support for Playing With Words, a school based reading initiative that sees Football League clubs challenging school classes to read 100 books within the space of a term, earning a special reward from their club once they reach the target.
All three schools hit their target this term and were rewarded with a Presentation Event at Burnley Football Club. They were taken on ground tours and presented with certificates. Tickets for Saturday's match against Cardiff City were given to the schools to award to children who had read the most books. Graham Alexander attended the event and handed out certificates and stayed to sign autographs for the children after the presentation.

The scheme is delivered by the Football Foundation and run through club Playing for Success centres, who oversee their Playing With Words partner schools and arrange reward sessions at the end of each school term.
Each partner school receives brand new books as reading resources and for every book read by a pupil, one crest sticker is added to a giant Playing With Words club wall chart.
Playing With Words is a partnership project between the Football Foundation, National Literacy Trust, Department for Children, Families and Schools, Football League, Professional Footballers' Association and Puffin Books.
For the 2008 project 24 Football League Clubs, including Burnley Football Club, are signed up to the initiative. The project started in January 2008 and runs through three terms - spring, summer and autumn. Each football club partner 3 local schools and Burnley Football Club is partnered for the project with St Peter's Primary School, Springfield Primary School and Brunshaw Primary School. At the end of each school term, the Football League club must reward as many of the three classes that have hit the target.
