Chris Eagles was on target twice to clip the Canaries wings and keep the Clarets flying high.

Two second half goals for the summer signing were enough to give Burnley a 2-0 win over Norwich City in a game which should have really been out of sight by half time.

Eagles slides home the opener

Some of the football at times from the Clarets was breathtaking - and striker Steven Thompson could have had himself a brace in the first half alone.

Norwich started brightly and the Clarets were fortunate that Darrell Russell fired wide after working a good opening on the edge of the Burnley box.

The Clarets crafted a couple of half chances of their own but found Canaries defender Gary Doherty in the way twice in the opening five minutes.

Steve Thompson then smashed an effort against the post after beating the offside trap, following a superb through ball from man-of-the-moment Robbie Blake.

On nine minutes, Clarke Carlisle had not one but two efforts cleared off the line by the Norwich keeper David Marshall and his defence after a great run from Blake, who was starting to fond top gear.

By now the Clarets were really getting into their stride and Wade Elliott had a shot deflected over on 21 minutes as the City defence creaked.

Thompson linked well with Blake again on 29 minutes, but unfortunately for Burnley the Scottish striker fired his header over the bar.

Carlisle was then alert to turn the ball behind for a corner on 35 minutes after Lee Croft broke well down the wing and cut inside for the visitors.

And defender John Kennedy then headed just over from the subsequent corner.

It was nearly a nightmare for Norwich keeper Marshall two minutes later, when he allowed Eagles' shot to go through his legs.

The ball spun wide for Thompson, who blazed his shot over the bar from close range.

Steven Thompson is just off target

A mix up between Jordan and Jensen on 43 minutes almost opened the door for Russell but, after nipping in between the Clarets keeper and his left back, the midfielder couldn't steer the ball into the net.

Bell had the first shot of the second half but his effort, on 47 minutes was wide of the target.

However, Eagles finally gave the Clarets the lead on 54 minutes, slotting through the legs of Marshall after a great driving run and through ball from Chris McCann following Blake's clever lay off.

And joining In the celebrations was Clarets mascot Bertie Bee - dropping his shorts to reveal a pair of the must-have 'Bad Beat Bob' Y-fronts, which the Turf Moor faithful have been going mad for over the last week!

Eagles doubled the lead just four minutes later, slotting home from just inside the box after being released by Blake, who expertly turned a quick Graham Alexander free kick into his path.

Eagles clinches it with a beauty ...

The finish was all the more staggering as the former Manchester United striker was the player fouled inside his own half, before sprinting 60 yards to make it four goals for the season.

... and takes the plaudits with 'Bad Beat Bob'

On-loan Leroy Lita had a glorious chance to grab a goal back from the visitors on 72 minutes, but he fired his shot wide when he really should have tested Jensen.

And as Norwich continued to push forward without giving Jensen much to do, Eagles thought he was in on his hat-trick on 79 minutes, only to have his chance snuffed out by some alert visiting defenders.

Late substitute Martin Paterson almost added a third for the Clarets on 88 minutes, but his angled shot was well tipped over by Marshall.

But in the end, it mattered very little as the Clarets ran out deserved 2-0 winners.
