GIFTON Noel-Williams was the hero of the hour as battling Burnley fought back from two goals down to grab all three points in a thrilling Roses clash at Turf Moor.

Trailing to Michael McIndoe's double whammy after half an hour, the Clarets staged a sensational fightback, inspired by transfer listed substitute Noel-Williams.

And after Jon Harley had halved the deficit before the interval with a slide-rule free kick Noel-Williams took over, grabbing his first Clarets goal in a year and going on to complete his first ever hat trick to topple the Tykes.

It was joy unconfined for the striker, who had been scandalously booed by some 'supporters' on his introduction from the bench in the 2-1 weekend defeat to Colchester.

And following his equaliser the moment was not lost on Noel-Williams' team mates, who raced from all four corners of Turf Moor to join in the celebrations with the match winner.

Noel-Williams then conjured up his second and Burnley's decisive third goal with just eight minutes remaining, And the striker saved the best until last, completing his treble to send Turf Moor into unbridled raptures.

However, few Burnley fans could have expected to be jumping for joy after witnessing the opening 30 minutes.

Burnley had begun brightly enough and from a fourth minute corner, John McGreal was unfortunate to find keeper Nick Colgan's midriff with a firm header.

As the frantic early pace continued,  Brian Jensen kept the scores level with a terrific instinctive save in the 17th minute. Paul Reid's shot looked to be harmless enough until it flicked off a boot to wrong-foot the Dane, who stuck out a boot to make a precious block.

Andy Gray headed Wade Elliott's cross just wide within 60 seconds as Burnley responded. But from the resulting 21st minute goal kick the Clarets fell behind to McIndoe's individual effort.

The Tykes' midfielder latched onto an unfortunate defensive slip to race 40 yards and slip the ball under Jensen from an acute angle.

Alan Mahon showed his first flashes as Burnley looked for a response, half volleying at Colgan after Michael Duff's cross flashed across the area.

But in the 32nd minute, a moment of indecision in the Clarets back line from Michael Duff  allowed McIndoe to steal in, play a one-two with Paul Hayes and double the Yorkshiremen's lead with a low drive.

Manager Steve Cotterill made an instant, match defining change, replacing Mahon with Noel-Williams, who had helped inspire the Clarets to a late fightback in the weekend loss to Colchester.

And again the striker's introduction had the immediate effect of lifting the team. Burnley had loud appeals for a penalty turned away five minutes before the break when Wade Elliott's shot from distance cannoned off an outstretched arm. However, referee Gary Sutton was unmoved by the claim, despite vehement protests.

The Clarets earned their rewards though within a minute as Harley stroked home a curling free kick from 25 yards. Four claret shirts huddled around the ball, which was quickly switched between them to create room for the former Chelsea defender to beat Colgan just inside his right hand post.

Suddenly it was game on! And the leveller might well have materialised before the break had Sutton allowed jet-heeled striker Jones to run unchallenged on goal from the half way line instead of pulling play back for a petty foul.

Instead, Barnsley's slender lead remained intact, with Noel-Williams powering a header straight at Colgan with the last incident of a frantic half.

Little did the big man know his big moment was not too far away. After a similar start to the second half, in which Gray fired just over, Noel-Williams created a chance for himself and just missed the angle with a terrific rising effort from the edge of the box.

But the striker finally got the goal all his rich play has deserved to ignite Turf Moor in the 57th minute.

The move began with James O'Connor's tremendous back-tracking and tackle to ignite a move that involved Hyde and Duff, who in turn freed Elliott on the right flank.

The winger left his marker for dead and hung up a magnificent cross to the far post, where Noel-Williams rose to plant a downward header back across Colgan and into the far corner.

Highlighting the unity in the camp, all 11 players - including Jensen, who raced fully 90 yards - piled atop the delighted hitman, whose last Burnley goal arrived a year ago against Derby County.

The 67th minute brought a heart-stopping moment for the resurgent home crowd as Martin Devaney took a lengthy run up and smacked the underside of Jensen's crossbar with a rasping free kick from distance.

But the nature of a pulsating contest was summed up when Jones could have put the Clarets ahead straight from the restart, forcing a fine save from Devaney after finding room on the right.

However, this game was to have a sting in the tale and Noel-Williams provided it  with just seven minutes remaining; cutting back inside from Hyde's clever ball and finding the top corner via the underside of the crossbar.

Suddenly, victory was within Burnley's grasp, and the new Turf Moor hero provided a fitting epitaph to the evening in the final minute, stooping to deflect home Hyde's mis-hit shot for a sensational hat-trick.
