Late Goals Lifts Edgar's Red Card Blues

Posted on: Mon 16 Aug 2010

David Edgar admits he endured a roller-coaster of emotions as his impressive comeback was curtailed by a red card at Ipswich Town.

Edgar has had to bide his time for starting opportunities since joining the Clarets from Newcastle United last summer and ended last season on loan at Swansea City.

After coming back into the fold during pre-season he got the nod from boss Brian Laws to deputise at right-back for the injured Tyrone Mears at Portman Road.

But a second caution 12 minutes from the end of Saturday's 1-1 draw saw Edgar forced to sit out the dramatic closing stages as Clarke Carlisle's injury-time header secured a point for the Clarets.

"There were mixed emotions," Edgar admitted. "I was happy to start and I thought I was doing quite well up to the sending off which was a bit unfortunate.

"There was nothing I could really do about the second one. I got caught in a two or three on one and he put it round me.

"I think he knew what he was doing and ran into me and went down. I think the ref could have been sensible about it but I think he had to give me another yellow card."

Edgar added: "It was disappointing because I didn't want to let the lads down.

Clarke Carlisle's goal was a welcome sight

"I just got showered and came out and Ipswich had scored so it was brilliant to see Clarkey pop up and get a goal.

"I just had come up the tunnel and I was pretty happy to see it. We were disappointed not to win but a draw was a good result there."

Carlisle and Edgar have underlined the Clarets' defensive strength by stepping into the breach since Laws named his opening-day line-up with Michael Duff and Mears both picking up knocks.

And with a one-match ban set to rule him out of Saturday's visit of Leicester City, the versatile Edgar hopes he will not have to wait too long for another opportunity.

"It was unfortunate because I was happy to play on Saturday," he said.

"It's been difficult trying to get in the team for me since I've been here. It was a different position again for me but when I get the chance I've just got to play well and show the gaffer I'm ready to play in the next game.

"Unfortunately now, though, I won't be able to be involved in the next game."
