Alexander Named As Skipper!

Posted on: Thu 05 Aug 2010

Clarets manager Brian Laws has today confirmed midfield lynchpin Graham Alexander as the new Burnley Club captain.

The Scottish international, 38, has been asked to fill the void opened up by the departure of former skipper Steven Caldwell, who left the club at the end of last season.

And Laws is delighted that 'Grezza' has taken on the captain's armband as the Clarets get set for their first season back in the Championship.

He said: "Graham is the consummate professional who has been instrumental in the success that this club has seen in the past few seasons, so it was an easy choice.

"He is a leader on the park as much as he is off it. He does everything right on the training ground and away from the ground and that's something you want every player to look upon.

"When you look at how old he is and see him still playing now, at a really good level, you know he's done all the right things.

"You couldn't ask for a better leader and hopefully he'll lead us on to better things this year."

Alexander, formerly captain with Preston North End, stepped into the role again many times last season, following a year of injury frustration suffered by Caldwell.

Leading by example: Grezza scores at Hull

And that was another factor in Laws choosing the veteran midfielder as his on-field leader.

He added: "Graham is no stranger to it either and it's important that you get that figurehead right.

"We're delighted to give him the captaincy and he's very proud of that."

There will be an EXCLUSIVE interview with the new skipper soon on Player.
