Alexander Hoping To Hunt Down Wolves

Posted on: Fri 12 Mar 2010

Graham Alexander is hoping the Clarets can build on their morale-boosting draw against Stoke as they prepare for another massive date in the top-flight calendar.

Wolves are the visitors to Turf Moor this weekend and with just goal difference separating the two sides at the bottom of the table, a victory for Burnley would see them leapfrog Mick McCarthy's men to move out of the relegation zone.

And the vastly-experienced Scot is confident the team can draw inspiration from their battling fight back in mid-week to help strengthen their survival bid on Saturday.

"I think everybody is quite positive really, we realised that we didn't play well at all in the first-half," admitted Alexander.

"We didn't get our game going and got sucked into a physical battle where we didn't play our own football. But you have to stand up to what Stoke throw at you and I think we did that.

"In the second-half we showed what we are more like and turned the game around. It was just a shame we couldn't push it a bit further and get the three points.

"We were happy to get something out of the game because I think we deserved it. I think if we played in the first-half like we did in the second then we would have taken the three points but it took us half a game to get going.

"You need three points in every game. Playing against Wolves who are down there with us makes it a massive game for both teams.

"But we are confident we can beat anyone at Turf Moor and we will go into the game positive from our second-half showing against Stoke.

"If we can go play like for that for the whole 90 minutes on Saturday, hopefully we can get the three points.

"It's not make-or-break yet, there are eight games left after Saturday, so there are a lot of points to play for. It's not a defining game, whatever the result, but we know it's an important one.

"Being at home it's one we can hopefully win, but Wolves aren't going to come here and turn themselves over, they will be looking for the points as much as us.

"We know what we are going to have to face and hopefully we will have enough to get the three points."

There are now nine massive games standing between Burnley preserving their Premier League status.

And the 37 year-old knows the importance of staying calm under pressure and keeping emotions in check, despite the hype building up from outside sources.

"You saw on Wednesday night from the response in the second-half that we can cope with the pressure. It would have been easy to capitulate in the second-half because we didn't play well at all in the first-half, it was one of our worst showings. But we turned it round after realising what we had to do in the second-half," added Alexander.

"The pressure is there to win games, I think it's there for everyone down at the bottom and at the top so there's a pressure from within to win games and get results.

"We are all fighting to stay in this league because we know how hard we worked to get here. We are working just as hard to stay here as well.

"There is a confidence thing with any team. If you win 10 on the bounce, you are flying and think you're invincible, but if you don't win for 10, you are thinking where the next win is going to come from.

"That's something which we have to compete against. There's lot of people behind the scenes with the staff and the players trying to stay positive which I think will show through in the last nine games. I believe that will be enough to get us the results that we need."
