Cort Insists 'We Have To Believe'

Posted on: Thu 04 Mar 2010

Leon Cort insists belief is the key to coming away with a positive result at the Emirates on Saturday.

The Clarets travel to title-chasing Arsenal on the back of a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to rock-bottom Portsmouth last weekend.

But Cort is adamant an upset is possible as Burnley look for their first away win of the season.

"The whole country believes we're going to go there and get wiped clean, but if we go there and believe, do what we can do and stay strong as a team, I believe we can cause an upset," said the London-born defender.

"It's another big game, but we have to go there with the mentality believing that we can do something.

"You can't go there and roll over because they will punish you. Obviously it's going to be a very tough game and our away form isn't great, but we have to go there and keep believing."

Cort is in positive a mood ahead of Saturday's game

The Clarets away form has been frustrating this season with just a solitary point gained on their travels at Manchester City back in November.

But Cort says that's something the team has focused on changing to give themselves the best possible chance of top-flight survival.

"A lot of teams go through this in football and a lot of the teams in the league have been struggling with their away form this season," he added.

"Obviously we know we've got the worst record but we're trying to change that as soon as we can.

"It seems as soon as we go a goal down we lose our shape and our heads go. We need to make sure that if we do go down we believe that we can get back into the game straight away, be patient with it and not lose hope.

"Away from home we always believe that we've got to score straight away but sometimes you have to patient and occasionally you have to sit back a little bit because they're the home team, they've got the advantage.

"We just have to be confident, keep our shape and believe that we can get something."

Clarets defence will need to be on form against the Gunners

The Clarets can take encouragement from a 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Turf Moor in December.

And although Cort watched that result from afar, before arriving from Stoke in January, he is aware his team-mates are still disappointed they didn't beat an Arsenal side which showed its resilience by winning at Stoke on Saturday, despite the horrific injury to Aaron Ramsey.

"A lot of the boys still talk about that game and how unlucky they were, but the lads are confident," Cort said.

"We believe we can stay up and it's going to be a tough game but it's a chance to prove people wrong.

"They're one of the best teams in the world and it's going to be a very tough game. They got a very good result against Stoke last week and they'll want to carry that on.

"I've read a few articles from their players saying that they want to win the title this season for Ramsey, so I believe come Saturday they'll really want to win this game for him.

"We've just go to be strong!"
