Laws: We Are In A Good Position

Posted on: Sat 27 Feb 2010

Bullish Burnley boss Brian Laws insists the Clarets are in a decent position to achieve their target of another season of Premier League football as they prepare to meet crisis club Portsmouth on Saturday.

Laws' men go into the game - which comes 24 hours after Portsmouth went into administration - in the bottom three.

But a win over Pompey, who look doomed following the nine-point deduction that will now come their way to leave them further adrift at the foot of the table, will propel the Clarets out of the relegation places and possibly as high as 15th.

"We are still in what I would call a good position," said Laws.

"It is so tight and I have stressed to many people that at the start of the season if anybody had said with 12 games to go there would be only one point between six or seven clubs would you take it?

"Damn right they would have taken it so we are in a good position and we are in a good position because everything is in our hands and we are not relying on anyone else.

"We are more than capable of doing it on our own without relying on anyone else."

The Clarets have lost just twice at home all season and with four of their next six games at Turf Moor have the opportunity to make a decisive move.

The visit of Pompey offers a fantastic opportunity to launch a winning run, although Laws stressed that Saturday's game is not make-or-break.

'Winning would give us a huge lift'

"Is it a 'must win game?' No, we haven't got to that point," he added.

"Must-win games mean you are desperate and we are not at a desperate point. But we want to win it. It's something we are attempting to do and something I believe we will do.

"Winning the game would give us a huge lift and would move us significantly out of the bottom three.

"It will be a huge one because we know that we will move forward if we get the right result.

"There's a lot at stake but we've known that for a long time. Our home games are going to be key for our success in the Premier League.

"The fact that we've got a few games at home coming up against teams around us we know how important these games are."

Laws could have Graham Alexander back from injury but league rules prevent on-loan striker David Nugent from facing his parent club.

There are still a number of tickets left for Saturday's game so make sure you get yours from the Turf Moor ticket office to get behind the lads and help win our survival fight.
