The Clarets were beaten 2-1 by an organised Leeds United side at Turf Moor.

Burnley fans will appreciate that fitness matters more than results at this stage of the season, but fans would have left Turf Moor disappointed as goals from Mike Grella and Andy Robinson gave Simon Grayson's side the win.

There were, however, positives to take away from the game with the substitutes making an impact.

And one of those second half introductions, home debutant David Edgar, pulled a consolation goal back for the Clarets, who could not force a late leveller as they had at Accrington four days earlier.

Chris Eagles almost carved out the first chance of the game on two minutes when he skipped passed Ben Parker and cut a ball back from the by-line, which Robbie Blake just couldn't steer goalwards.

Parker did likewise for the visitors just a couple of minutes later but his low ball across the box evaded everyone much to the relief of the Clarets' defence.

Eagles had a dipping effort just over the bar on nine minutes after Burnley had weathered an early storm against a Leeds side intent on attacking.

Bradley Johnson stuck the post with a free kick on 27 minutes with Brian Jensen rooted to the spot and a minute later Grella curled a shot over after nipping the ball inside new signing Tyrone Mears.

The game was a typical pre-season affair, with both sides getting a good feel of the ball without creating much in the final third.

That should have changed on 35 minutes though when Enoch Showunmi was given a chance to fire Leeds ahead from just six yards.

However the striker, a late replacement for Jermaine Beckford, who fell ill in the warm-up, somehow side-footed his effort wide with the goal at his mercy.

The dangerous Johnson went close with a longe-range effort a minute later, which Jensen looked to have covered.

But the visitors were finally ahead on 39 minutes when a slip from skipper Steve Caldwell let Grella in behind the defence.

The US striker steadied himself and curled a nice shot past Jensen to send a sizeable Yorkshire following into raptures.

It should have been 1-1 on the stroke of half-time, but Eagles shot just wide after great interplay between Blake and new £3 million striker Steven Fletcher.

Blake then fired a free kick straight at Casper Ankergren at the start of the second half as the Clarets looked to get back on level terms.

Owen Coyle shuffled his pack on 55 minutes, replacing Kalvenes with Stephen Jordan and Blake with Tuesday night's goal hero Steven Thompson.

But the chances contonue to fall to the visitors and just after the hour mark Grella screwed a shot wide.

The visitors though made it 2-0 on 69 minutes when substitute Andy Robinson fired an angled shot past Jensen after latching onto fellow sub Robert Snodgrass' deep cross.

Another sub pulled a goal back for the Clarets on 74 minutes.

Edgar - making his home debut for the Clarets - slid home a Wade Elliott cross form a short Eagles' corner to give the Clarets hope of emulating Tuesday night's comeback.

Unfortunately, that never fully materialised and scuffed shots from Eagles and Kevin McDonald at the death were as close as the Clarets came to grabbing an equaliser against their League One opposition.
