Burnley have made their first signing of the January transfer window, bringing in Sunderland defender Stanislav Varga on an initial one-month loan deal.

The 35 year-old central defender, who has not featured for Roy Keane's side this campaign, is eligible to play in Sunday's FA Cup tie with Arsenal.

Speaking about the new arrival, boss Owen Coyle said: "I'm delighted to get Varga in on loan.

"I have known him for years, both from when I played against him and during my time as a coach and manager.

"In the light of our injuries and suspensions, he will bring a physical presence to the backline.

"I'm sure he will compliment the squad and have a big impact on the team."

In action north of the border for Celtic.

A towering and commanding centre-half, Varga returned for a second spell on Wearside when he arrived from Celtic in summer 2006.

He made 20 appearances at the Stadium of Light last season, helping the club secure promotion to the Premiership.

Varga originally moved to Sunderland in summer 2000, when Peter Reid recruited him for £650,000 from Slovan Bratislava.

The Slovakian international, who has over 50 caps for his country, is very useful at set pieces and his only goal of last season came at Preston in October.

He enjoyed great success with Celtic and after joining the Glasgow giants in February 2003, Varga helped the Hoops to win the SPL title and Scottish FA Cup.

Varga will wear squad number 24 at Turf Moor and the first, exclusive interview with the Clarets' latest signing  will be available on Clarets World followng the weekend game with Arsenal.
